Langebaan Lagoon

The picturesque modern town of Langebaan borders the salt water Lagoon. Langebaan Lagoon is a large self-sustaining, pure salt water lagoon which is an internationally acclaimed Ramsar Site for its importance as a wetland.

The large, shallow marine lagoon, includes islands, reedbeds, sand flats, saltmarshes and dwarf shrubland. The lagoon is an important nursery area for a number of fish species and supports a diverse and ecologically important algal and shoreline biota.

The tidal mud flats of the lagoon also attract thousands of migratory birds every year, and resident species are prolific and include greater and lesser flamingos. The world's largest breeding colony of black harriers also occurs in the area. The lagoon is also important for wintering and staging wading birds, and the numerous breeding birds include the largest colony of gulls in South Africa.

Bird-watchers visit the area to view the over 300 species of birds found in the lagoon waters of the West Coast National Park. The intertidal areas support as many as 55 000 water birds in summer.

The lagoon is an intense turquoise, 16 km long and no wider than 3 km at any point and only 6 metres deep at its deepest. All that lies between it and the Atlantic Ocean is the Langebaan Peninsula, 15 km long and 2 km wide with Vlaeberg and Konstabelkop as known landmarks.

Daily tides bring nutrient rich water from the ocean into the lagoon, provided by the cold benguela current flowing up the west coast. The lagoon supports huge populations of crabs and snails, as well as over 70 different marine algae, and serves as an ecologically important nursery for juvenile fish.

Other than the lagoon's ecological importance, the almost year round sunshine, safe waters and reliable winds make Langebaan paradise for water sports lovers - particularly kite surfers, wind surfers, kayakers, yachtsmen, water skiers and fishermen.

Being protected from the open sea, the lagoon waters are a lot warmer than the icy Atlantic and measures up to 25 ?C at times, especially at Kraalbaai. It therefore provides a safe space for families with it shallow sandbanks, warm and calm waters.
